Correspondence, notes, notebooks, manuscripts, speeches, certificates, photographs, clippings, and reprints of articles. Files on Acoustical Society of America, American Physiological Society, American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, American Medical Association Council on Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, American Standards Association, International Society on Audiology, and Office of Naval Research. The papers concern, for the most part, his career in St. Louis which began in 1946 when he became director of research at Central Institute for the Deaf and joined the Washington University School of Medicine's Departments of Physiology and Otolaryngology. Prior to this he was at Harvard University where he earned his M.D. degree (1922) and taught in the Departments of Physiology and Otolaryngology for 22 years. He made major contributions in design objectives for audiometers and hearing aids, treatment of acoustic trauma, development of tests for the hearing impaired, and in other neurophysiological problems relating to hearing. He conducted research for the U.S. Armed Forces, directed investigations in electroencephalography and ultrasonics, as well as in problems associated with sonic boom and noise pollution. Although he retired officially in 1976, he remained active as a researcher. In 1976 he was awarded the National Medal of Science. Davis's autobiography, The Professional Memoirs of Hallowell Davis, was published by The Central Institute for the Deaf in 1991 (112 pp. with bibliography) and is part of the collection.
